n honour of this being the first day of school in La Cité (and since it's been a long time since I've done one of these), here's a little meme inspired by a game I last played on the playground at recess...
Woo hoo! With Megan Fox, I suppose that would make my car, some sort of Rodimus Prime look-a-like! I should definitely use this as my alt-moi in my next story.
In light of this, I wonder if I should take my MtG tarot draw of the day seriously, as I got LURE.
While I understand this is meant to be used on an opponent, it seems for an invitation from the Invisible Masters to put a weirdness magnet on yours truly...
That's paranoia for you...
It's one thing to have trouble sleepig but I had almost forgotten the adrenaline pumping that brings an early rise for work-related reasons. A mixture of adrenaline and cold caffeine that makes my heart flutter for a few minutes...
Cloud City is keeping me busy away from work, which is kind of a good thing seeing the goal is near.
I did take some time to pick up a little something for The Raven's Birthday tommorow. As Chuck season 2 is not yet out, I tur to plan B. Hopes he likes Patrick Stewart in a Toga!
Today's MtG Tarot is *almost* how I feel as I drew OVERRUN. So far all the bricks falling down are fitting it nicely. Hope this will remain at least for a few weeks...
Maybe today is the kind of jolt I need just to reset my internal clock and hopefully shed from fatigue.A paradox I know but I seem to be full of them lately.
There was a time that week-ends were the most boring as my soul was undertaking some un-crushing and there was rarely anything interesting on the data gathering front.
It could be a coincidence but my week-ends have become free-er since my latest bout of work troubles started. I guess it's Life's way of reaching balance.
My MtG draw of the day is ALUREN. I guess I have to take the symbolism of seeing it as a message that the free-flowing week-ends is indeed a good thing and I should enjoy while it lasts...
Chaos will so soon rain down on our fair country as the freeze imposed by Harper's decision to proroge the session as he didn't want to face a Dion-led coallition.
Now, almost a month as passed, the Conservatives seem not to have budged from their position and the Grits have a new leader. It's both a good thing and a bad thing. Ignatieff looks to be a more solid leader than Dion ever were (at least he has support from the base), but he doesn't seem to show enthusiasm towards an alliance with the NDP with the tacit blessing of the Bloc.
All I hope is that this won't mean another election. I mean it's been almost 6 weeks since the last, I don't think i would remember how to do it.
In other news, came across this great Call of Cthulhu adventure made my Goodman Games called "Death In Luxor" which mixes Lovecraftian mythos with Ancient Egypt.
It feels as close as one could imagine a mix of either "Indiana Jones" of even "The Mummy" with Great Old Ones.
From what I could gather, there's supposed to be other adventures based in Asia and South America on a similar vein.
Reading this sparks a lot of ideas...
On a MtG Tarot level, I've drawn INVIGORATE. I think it's a message from the Destiny threadmixers that are in charge of my life that, now is the time for me to gather my strength.
With my karma-impaired superiors AWOL, I think ch-ch-changes are coming.
Yeah, yeah, I could talk about Obama's victory but I am suffering from election fatigue...
Instead, let me talk about 2 quotes from 2 very different sources which kind of mirrors my current feelings
The first is a quote I read in yesterday's Montreal Gazette from W.E.B Du Bois, a very fitting source because of the previous night's event.
"The most important thing to remember is this: to be ready at any moment to give up what you are for what you might become". Hmm, all these years I unkonwlingly was following that maxim, foolling never having thought a moment it had been put to paper. There was a couple of times that I did indeed "give up" all the past and its baggage in order to "evolve", but not before reading this made me realize that it was indeed a conscious decision one has to undertake.
The other is something taken from a "Order of the Stick" strip. Here's the main gist of the message.
For someone who dons a mask, so to speak, of a being who (ab)uses the fickleness of Fate, the notion of "cheating" to get by (and for once, not in the sense of going outside the legal sphere, but on a more metaphysical level), I couldn't help but to remember the rules of the Illuminati! card game, which stated that cheating was legal, unless one was caught. But the main point is that it confirms an argument I was defending some years ago with a x-removed cousin, who I had recently found out was a fellow RPGer, which stated that people in "real life" couldn't help but be "Lawful Good" in overwhelming majority. Not so, for a D&D standpoint the comment above reflects mor a "chaotic good" attitude and to be honest, I am pretty sure THIS is more in line with how people behave. 'Course it could my cynicism that darkens my world-view.
NaNoWriMo-wise, I'm still having trrouble to get that boopin' stats widget working on my end. I'm now at 9047 words and counting.
My MtG Tarot draw of the day is ELFHAME SANCTUARY. I guess one cannot find profound enlightement in everything.
Unless...
Actually, the notion of sanctuary is not so far-fetched as one would expect. A couple of days away from it all could very well be what the doctor ordered.
Finally, I have decided to put some bike-related pics. The summer having been what it was, weather-wise, I have only been able to go for a ride, only 1 week-end out of 3.
This Louis Garneau Urbania hybrid is a charm. Getting it for free is just the icing on the cake. I only am a bit disappointed that I'm not able to put a rack as the frame is too wide for it to hold.
Still, the perfect bike to ride for a couple of hours. Now, if the humidity and/or rain could hold out for a few days
Here's yours truly, coming bike from my latest ride. Not really Tour de France attire, but EPO is soooo costly.
Funny thing is that while on the bike path, I came across my favourite waitress from the local watering joint, didn't know she was living close by.
Weird to see someone outside of what one could consider their public habitat. Reminds me of the old Constanza tirade about circles that needed to be kept separate
On a more personal note, the past few weeks at work have been hell. With summer vacations in full swing, and me being the lucky so-and-so who's staying during the whole streak, I get more than my fair share of work. It's not so bad as a few years back but nstill a bit harrying. So I apologize to all you guys I have neglected and hopefully, I'll be able to keep my head above... GLUB! GLUB! GLUB! Oh well, it was a nice thought. :-)
I think my MtG draw is wishful thinking as I have drawn CITY OF SOLITUDE. Which sounds a perfect setting for some well-deserved R&R. Only 7 more months till Mexico...
Some, well not "big" but "interesting" in the old Chinese proverb sense. First of all, on the more dire fronts, it seems that BigMediaCo is tightening the locks to corporate Net access. They have blocked all the main web mail providers (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!). Ugh! I understand the fact that some people abuses surfing but I don't understand why they don't go to them, instead of hosing everyone. At least, they haven't blocked access to Vox (yet) and they are ways to get around.
On the plus side, this will probably free some time in my morning ritual, as e-mail takes about half the time between my arrival at the office and the start of my shift. Of course, it's gonna make getting my Vox alerts a bit more hectic but I can live with that for the moment.
Other potential bad moko from the office was the fact that I just narrowly managed to confirm all my vacation days for the next semseter. While all my randomly-selected vacations were green-lighted, it was my Ixtapa trip that was in jeopardy. It's the first time since I have started going there, that I faced this kind of problem. I can only imagine all the problems in would put on my story gathering. Oh yeah! My not going there would kind of suck too. I guess I got some kind of karmic balance with all the crap from the past 7 days.
The project's gone all Kubrick as we had a wine-and-cheese reception to celebrate the (postponed) launch. THe funny thing is that the first toast went : Here's to this project, who was supposed to start today, will be officially announced next week, and will REALLY, REALLY start 2 weeks from now. And i used to worry that Marketing would sway me to their Dark Side. Ha!
MtG Tarot-wise, I've got TAUNTING CHALLENGE. Why is it that I have this sinking feeling that the Fates are having a field day with youts truly?
I'm currently seated at the train station waiting for my train to arrive. This seems as good a time as any to put pen to paper to take a look back at the few days.
On Friday, we left La Cité about a quarter hour late for reasons unexplained. For the first time I started taking the trip, I noticed that the train (well, the First Class wagon) was less than half-full, which was espceially puzzling, given that this was an holiday week-end.
As I arrived to the motel, I was thrown out of the loop, when they refused to take me in on account I wasn't carrying either a credit card (hunh?) or a driver's licence (wtf?) to my name. Even though, I had called ahead and had been assured that it would not be a problem. On the first point, I had expected this to be a problem and had planned to pay in advance for my stay, thinking that it would enough. Well Nyet, I was told... As for the former, I was baffled when my offer of any other government ID was met with disdain and the night clerk started spinning a cockanamie tale about how a cop friend of his had told him that a driver's licence was the only "valid" ID (whatver that means). But the final straw was when after all this, the clerk started in a conspirational tone "Well, something could be arranged..." Meaning, that these technicalities could be overlooked if I gave another 200$ (for blackmail insurance purposes, ha!).
Not having taking the Turnip express to town and having noticed the long row of alternating motels (and strip joints, but I digress), I gave a peice of my mind to that pompous ass, spending enough time that a couple of customers who had come in decided to turn away and daring the guy to call the cops on me. After he retreated to the backroom, I left and went to the motel on the next block, Where it costed me 60$ less. So it's Motel Ritz, yea! and a loud FU to the folks at Motel Adam.
The worst part of this, is that this place had been recommended, not from previous experience but from a third-person hearsay and convenient location. This prooves that I should really trust my own instincts. At least, the rest of my stay was not so bad. Having decided not to succomd to temptation to use RPG-style sources, I decided to look at my surrondings and find items of interest, without resorting to the tourist trappings.
That's how I ended up with scouting local gas stations (there's madness to my method, emphasis on "madness"). One thing that drew my eye was a magazine called SMAC which is about drag racing. Now, this is not a field that I would normally look into, but I guess it sort of helped crystallize an image I want to give to my vision of Ottawa. I mean, all I had before was tainted by my hanging out with the Diver Prince, which is as far from "regular" life as i could get. With the prospect of return visits where I'll probbably use the same place as a base of operations, I'll see whether or not I should change my process.
MtG-wise, I've drawn DOUBLING SEASON, which I supposed is a prelude to my many happy returns to the town of Bytown...
...or then again, it could have been a message about the Adam Motel price-gouging. I hate hindsight omens!!!
